Can fear actually be a God--designed blessing in disguise?

The easiest answer to this question is I don’t know. What I do know in my life is when I look back on those times of struggle and fear, it is a time that God has grown me, which in turn has been a blessing.

In thinking about the biblical relationship between faith and fear, it starts in Genesis. Adam and Eve made the choice to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. In accepting that knowledge we were then aware of the fear of evil, death, dying and so much more. We had the knowledge and experience of what it felt like to be separated from God. The mere fact of separation from God is ultimate fear. When Jesus was on the Cross in the last moments, he said God why have your forsaken me. This is the first time Jesus felt separation from God and took on the true separation of human sin.

As we experience unbearable, unexpected and unknown things in our lives we feel this same separation that Jesus felt. Forsaken is a feeling of abandonment. We can wonder where God is in this struggle. It is time that fear enters in easily. God knows we are full of fear. It is mentioned 366 times in the bible to “fear not.” He knows we are uncomfortable in these spaces. He sent Jesus to solidify the relationship between God the father, Son and Holy spirit. He wants us to embrace him and know His spirit.

It is often in fear that we dive deeper into that relationship and grow stronger in our faith. If we look at the definition of faith according to Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." In times of uncertainty we do not know what is to come but in faith we can wash away the fear and know the promises of God in our past and in His word.

In fear we find faith, they go together and then we have peace from God. This doesn’t mean we don’t feel fear if we have faith, it just means we can walk to God with the fear we will naturally have during our journey through life.

Is there a fear you need to release to God? Take the time to talk to him and release this fear to him. Ask him to carry it for you and take it from you.
